Frequently Asked

The questions we
always get.

  • What's the methodology behind your Modern Band program?

Our Modern Band methodology is built on the Little Kids Rock pedagogy known as 'Music as a Second Language.' Students learn music the way they learned to speak — by playing it first, with notation introduced only after fluency. The result: students improvise, compose, and perform from day one, on the instruments they already love (guitar, ukulele, bass, drums, piano, voice).

  • How long does a typical partnership last?

Most partnerships are organized by term (10–14 weeks) and renew automatically each season. Modern Band school partnerships are typically structured as full-year contracts with a one-month opt-out window.

  • What are typical group sizes?

Most after-school classes run 6–12 students (ukulele, guitar, choir) or 6–20 (bucket drumline, choir, African hand drumming). Rock Band, Junior Band and Group Jam run 4–10. Little Rockers programs (Baby Bop, Tiny Tunes, Junior Jam) run 6–12 children per session. Workshops have minimums of 25 for some shows. We're flexible — talk to us about your specific room.

  • Can we add private 1-on-1 lessons at our venue?

Yes. Many partners stack private 30-minute lessons (guitar, drum, piano, vocal, ukulele, violin, saxophone, flute, clarinet, trumpet, theory, songwriting, digital music production) on top of group programming — particularly schools running an after-school enrichment program. Same instructors, same calendar.

  • Do you bring instruments?

Yes — for after-school programs, workshops, and shows we bring everything we need. For Modern Band school partnerships we work with your existing equipment where possible, and supplement with our own where helpful.

  • Where do you operate?

Our community-programs team currently serves the Greater Toronto Area, Ottawa, and select cities across Ontario. Reach out — we'll tell you honestly whether we can serve your location, and if not, we'll often have a recommendation.

  • How are pricing and invoicing handled?

Pricing depends on program type, frequency, group size, and travel. We provide a written proposal after a 15-minute discovery call. Invoicing is monthly, by purchase order or e-transfer.

  • Are your teachers vetted?

All instructors complete vulnerable-sector checks and carry their own insurance. We can provide documentation packages on request, formatted for school boards or municipal partners.

  • Can you serve inclusion groups and adaptive programs?

Yes. Several of our programs — Feel the Beat Rhythm Therapy, Joy of Music, and our music-therapy formats — are designed specifically for inclusion and adaptive settings. We're happy to consult on the right fit.

  • What does a 'discovery call' actually involve?

Fifteen minutes on the phone. We learn your audience, venue, calendar, and goals; you learn how we work, what's possible, and roughly what it costs. No slides, no pitch deck.
